It’s Only Me (The Wizard of Magicland)
Turns out my favourite song by the Barenaked Ladies is about masturbation. I had absolutely no clue. I still love the song, though. It’s better than not knowing what it was about, I suppose.
I first heard the song on the soundtrack for NHL 2002, back in … well, 2001.
Anyway, I highly suggest that you check out the song. (Might be kind of loud. It’s the “remastered version”, and as usual these days, that means they made it really loud for no damn reason.)
Back from the city.
I don’t know if I ever wrote about it on the blog, but I did mention it on Twitter. That is to say, I went down to Vancouver yesterday, to see a couple of movies, including an advanced screening of Get Smart. (Brought to me by Crush, 94.5 FM The Beat, KVOS 12 Television, The Vancouver Sun, and Warner Bros.)
The trip went far from as planned, but in the end it seems to have worked out. So here’s the story:
I awoke late at around 8:45. I had intended to get up at 8 on the dot, but my alarm never went off. I rushed to get ready, and couldn’t even get anything to eat before we left. I packed up my laptop and PSP, as well as The Portable Nietzsche, and a bottle o’ water.
During our drive to the ferry terminal at Langdale, we hit a deer. A doe, to be specific. It just kind of appeared, and jumped out into the road. My mom slammed on the brakes, the ABS kicked in, and we just barely hit it at around 60km/h. It got up and ran off, and was clearly fine–no broken bones, blood, etc, just looked like a bruise at the most. Our car, however, not so much. My mom kept driving until she could pull over, and then we checked out what had happened.
The left turn signal had fallen off, but was still attached by a wire, and was dangling to the side of the car. The front grille (grill?) was torn off partially (and it was metal), and the casing around the left headlight was gone. (The headlight was also out of alignment.) There was also a sizeable dent in the hood of the car.
After pulling off pieces here of broken plastic here and there, and getting some duct tape and taping the turn signal back into position (as well as testing to see if it worked), we took off towards Gibsons again, and stopped at the Marketplace IGA there to see my dad, as my mom wanted to ask him if it was still driveable.
He said that it looked fine. We just needed to keep taping it up to make sure the turn signal was secure, and could just drive down to the city. We had to hurry though, to make the ferry. We just barely caught it (we got there 2 minutes after the gate was supposed to be closed, but they let us go anyway.) and stayed in the van during the crossing to Horseshoe Bay.
I got a snack from a vending machine at one point and watched some Battlestar Galactica before we finally arrived at Horseshoe Bay Terminal. We drove off, and my mom got to try driving down a very fast highway with no left turn signal. To let others know we were intending on turning into the lane to the left of us, she’d have to constantly turn the signal off and on, as it wouldn’t flash on its own anymore. The back turn signal worked though, so when there was no one in front of her, she didn’t worry much.
After driving all the way to Burnaby, we finally arrived at Metropolis at Metrotown, and rushed up the elevator to Silvercity. We got there just in time to see You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, which I used some <a href=”http://www.scene.ca” title=”SCENE – The movie reward program from Scotiabank and Cineplex Entertainment”>SCENE</a> points to pay for. I also used my SCENE ScotiaCard to buy my mom’s ticket, thus earning even more SCENE points towards my next movie. (She also paid me back for the ticket. Yay!)
The movie was really awesome. I haven’t liked anything Adam Sandler has done lately, such as 50 First Dates, Click, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, but I did enjoy Reign Over Me, but that wasn’t a comedy. I wasn’t sure if I’d like Zohan, but it was really very well written and filmed. All the scenes that should’ve been funny were. No missed jokes, etc.
After the movie ended, me and my mom walked around for a while looking for an internet connection, as I had forgotten to find out exactly where the theatre that Get Smart would be showing at was located. After getting to a FutureShop, but remembering I didn’t have the address with me–it was still in the van, in the mall’s parkade–we walked back to the van, and eventually drove around in search of unsecured Wi-Fi access.
We drove all over the place, and couldn’t find a strong enough signal, and every Starbucks we got near didn’t seem to have free Wi-Fi, but instead offered a Bell Hotspot that you had to pay for. Eventually we went into a Starbucks at the Brentwood Town Centre with my laptop, got something to drink, and found some other free Wi-Fi in the mall. We found out where the theatre was on <a href=”http://maps.google.ca” title=”Google Maps Canada”>Google Maps</a>, and decided to grab a bite to eat first.
We ate at A&W in the mall’s food court, checked out an EBGames, and then decided to head to the SkyTrain to take it to Downtown Vancouver. Half way to the theatre, we realised I had forgotten the letter I needed to get my tickets in the van at Brentwood. We turned around, got the letter, and got back on the SkyTrain.
When we finally arrived, we waited for the elevator for ages (the escalators weren’t working, so the elevators were freakishly full of people) and finally went up to the theatre. There was a line longer than any I had ever seen first-hand. It was freakish. And they were all there to see Get Smart. I found the Crush representative, got my tickets, and stood in line with my mom.
After over an hour of waiting, we finally got into the theatre that the movie was showing in, but had awful seats over in the lefternmost corner, 2nd row from the front. My neck still kind of hurts from watching it, but it was so very worth it. The movie is the best I’ve seen in quite some time, and I’m totally looking forward to seeing it again when it’s released on DVD.
After the movie, we got back on the SkyTrain, and took it all the way back to the Brentwood Town Centre. We got in the van, and went to get some gas at a nearby Petro-Canada, and then drove around for a while in search of something to eat. Or rather, I was hungry, so my mom put up with me, and took me to a Denny’s.
I got the best burger I had ever eaten, ever. A Denny’s Slamburger, which had a cheesy hashbrown casserole on it, followed by a patty of scrambled eggs, a beef patty, and on top was a tangy mozzarella cheese sauce. It was so damn good, but was also a little over twelve dollars. ($12 CDN!) I also just found out that it had 1080 calories, and now I guess I’ll never have one again. Anyway, after that we finally headed to my Uncle George’s, wherein I watched more Battlestar Galactica before finally going to sleep around 2:47 AM.
When I got up in the morning, I proceeded to watch even more Battlestar Galactica, and ate a quick scrambled-egg sandwich (my Uncle’s speciality, which is just awesome) and then me and my mom headed out to get the ferry.
Of course there was horrendous traffic. We missed the 11:20 sailing by all of 3 minutes, and were forced to sit there at the terminal ’til 1:30, as the ferry we caught was late. Before the ferry came, however, I snacked out on some food from a vending machine, and watched the rest of an episode of Battlestar Galactica, as well as an episode or two of Pinky and the Brain on my laptop.
I slept on the ferry during the crossing. as I was just really very tired (I still am!) and I don’t remember much about it… except that I got a bottle of water, and the vending machine stole $0.50 in change.
We arrived at Langdale, and drove back to Sechelt. We stopped by my work to pick up my paycheque, which wasn’t there. Apparently my boss hadn’t done the payroll the night prior, and Maureen told me that it was the first time that had ever happened during her 2.5 years of being there.
After that we went home, and after unpacking all of my stuff (which consisted of plugging my laptop in and checking my e-mail), my mom headed out to work, and I got a call from my work asking me if I could come in tonight. I was thinking about it, but ultimately decided against it, as I’m just too damn tired and sore from walking around the city in cruddy support-less shoes, and sleeping on ferries and on uncomfortable hide-a-beds, etc.
So there you have it. My trip to the city pretty much summed up. I omitted a few non-important things, like me and my mom kept seeing people with frozen pizzas walking around Brentwood Town Centre, and all over the SkyTrain system, but we found out that there was a giant truck giving out Delisso Ultimate pizzas, but we couldn’t grab one, as we had nowhere to put it, since we were on our way to the theatre.
I also omitted the best part of anything ever– Seeing Nate Torrence–not well known, but he’s been in some pretty funny commercials, etc–talk about having to painstakingly milk spiders for their silk, and having Masi Oka (Hiro Nakamura from Heroes) mention that they don’t like it.
You’ll have to see Get Smart to see what I’m talking about, as the delivery of the line was just perfect. Superb! 100% Aces! A+! Great! (I loved it.)

The Lazy (Video) Podcast #11 – Candy Edition
Today, while grocery shopping, I ran across an unmarked stand hidden away in the Gibsons Marketplace IGA. It didn’t even have price tags on most of the things (I later found out that they hadn’t been put on yet, but were in a pile under one of the boxes, that’s how I knew how much everything would cost), and was full of chocolate bars and other candy that I had never heard of. Things like a “Lion Bar“, a giant slab of Bassett’s Nougat (just nougat, no chocolate or anything), a “Violet Crumble“, “Galaxy” chocolate (turns out Galaxy is sold in Canada and the States, among a few other countries, as “Dove” chocolate. Which I’ve also never tried.), a “Galaxy Ripple“, something called a “Sherbet Fountain“, and a bunch of other stuff I didn’t buy, like Cadbury “Buttons“, and all sorts of weird and very expensive imported candy.
I picked up $10 worth. If I were to buy one of everything there, it’d be well over $25 bucks. For stale (the best before date on half of it is two months ago) imported candy. Anyway, I got one Lion Bar, one slab o’ Bassett’s Nougat, one Violet Crumble, one Galaxy Ripple, and two Bassett’s Sherbet Fountains. My mom ended up getting a giant package of Galaxy chocolate. Just like any other giant chocolate bar/slab. I’ll be trying that as well.
Anyway, after I got home, I decided that I might as well make a video podcast out of it, as I was going to take pictures of all the candy anyway for the blog. After that, I decided that I might as well review each chocolate bar/kind of candy that I bought over the next week or two, so I can tell other Canadians what the candy is like. I plan on going back to pick up whatever I didn’t get this time in two weeks when I go shopping again, if I can get out to the Marketplace IGA there. (I usually shop at the one in Wilson Creek where my mom works, rather than the one where my dad works. I suppose I could have him pick up the candy for me, though.)
Anyway, here’s the video:
My first paycheque.
I got my first paycheque today, from two weeks ago’s… shifts… Or something. Anyway, it was only for the one day that I worked before I got the abscess/cyst/couldn’t work, so it was only for 39.51 or something. (Just under $40.) I opened a new bank account at Scotiabank (both Savings and Chequing) and put the cheque into the Savings account (what am I going to do with $40?–I said I’d save $50 from each cheque after the first 4 or 5, so… for now I just put it away.) and I put $40 I had for lunches for the rest of school in the chequing account. I also got a <a href=”http://www.scene.ca” title=”SCENE – The movie reward program from Scotiabank and Cineplex Entertainment”>Scene</a> membership along with the Scotiacard.
Anyway, other than that, all I’ve been doing lately is feeling sick from the antibiotics (I take the last one tonight @ 10PM! Yay!), playing some Call of Duty 4, watching movies, working, attending school, and… posting many tweets to Twitter.
In closing, I’ve had a pretty nice week. Nothing too awesome, nothing too cruddy. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’mm’a get something for dinner, and maybe watch a movie.
